Overview

The vertical rainforests of Uganda and the vast savannahs of the Maasai Mara serve as the backdrop for this 12-day "Classic" expedition across Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda.

This is a high-intensity journey that transitions from the high-altitude volcanic forests of Bwindi to the open plains of the Great Rift Valley. You move through an environment that smells of damp moss and woodsmoke, tracking endangered mountain gorillas and the "Big Five" alongside expert local guides.

Because this tour involves demanding hikes at altitude and follows strict government permit schedules for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, you should book your Masai Mara & Gorilla Adventure early to ensure your trekking permits are secured.

Itinerary

  1. The journey begins in the Kenyan capital. There are no planned activities during the day, allowing you to acclimatize. In the evening, you will meet your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) and the rest of your small group (maximum 12 travelers) for a welcome briefing at your hotel in Westlands.
  2. You depart at 8:00 AM, descending into the Great Rift Valley. You’ll reach the Maasai Mara—one of the world's premier safari destinations—in time for a late afternoon game drive. Keep your eyes on the horizon for the "Big Five": lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. You’ll spend the night at a safari tented camp.
  3. The air is crisp during your early morning game drive, when the big cats are most active. You have the option to take a dawn balloon safari over the Mara River or visit a local Maasai village to learn about their nomadic culture and traditional warrior dances. A second afternoon game drive maximizes your chances of spotting a kill.
  4. After a final morning in the bush, you begin the drive back to the city. You’ll stop at the "Amani ya Juu" project, a G Adventures for Good initiative that empowers local women through fair-trade handicrafts. You’ll enjoy a locally sourced lunch prepared by the community before returning to Nairobi for the night.
  5. You’ll take a short 90-minute flight across the border to Entebbe, Uganda. From the airport, a private vehicle transfers you to the bustling capital of Kampala. This is a transition day to rest before the physical trekking portion of the tour begins.
  6. The route heads west into the lush landscapes of Uganda. You’ll spend the day traveling to Fort Portal, located at the edge of the Kibale National Park. Your accommodation is a guest farm where you’ll sleep in furnished tents surrounded by the sounds of monkeys and tropical birds.
  7. The morning is dedicated to a chimpanzee trek with a park ranger. You’ll navigate the evergreen rainforest to find our distant cousins in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, you’ll join the Bigodi community for a traditional organic lunch and have the option to take a guided walk through the wetlands to spot rare primates and birds.
  8. The expedition continues to Queen Elizabeth NP, crossing the equator along the way. In the afternoon, you’ll head out on a game drive across the open savannah. This park is famous for its large populations of elephants and buffalo, as well as the elusive tree-climbing lions.
  9. A sunrise game drive offers the best light for photography and wildlife viewing. You’ll spend the afternoon at leisure, with the option to take a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel. This waterway is a focal point for crocodiles, hippos, and hundreds of bird species.
  10. You’ll travel south through a landscape of volcanoes and lakes. The drive takes you to the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll settle into a camp on the forest's edge to prepare for the early start tomorrow.
  11. This is the tour’s main highlight. You’ll rise early to meet your park ranger for an orientation. The trek can last anywhere from one to six hours through dense, vertical forest and stinging nettles. Once you find a gorilla family, you will spend one hour observing them—a privileged and breathtaking experience. The afternoon is free to recover from the hike.
  12. The final leg involves crossing the border into Rwanda and driving to the capital, Kigali. You’ll visit the Genocide Memorial Centre to reflect on the country's history. The tour concludes with a farewell lunch at the Nyamirambo Women's Centre. Please ensure any onward flights depart after 6:00 PM.

Expect a physically demanding trip (Rating: 4) involving high-altitude hiking through dense vegetation and stinging nettles. The transit is a mix of private vans, 4x4 safari vehicles, and one internal flight. Accommodations are "Standard," featuring a mix of hotels and simple furnished tents with character. Because gorilla permits are limited to eight people per family per day, your group may be split into smaller sub-groups for the trek.

Safari & Trekking Insider Secrets

  • Reddit travelers suggest bringing gaiters and heavy-duty gardening gloves for the Bwindi gorilla trek. You will often need to grab onto vines and stinging nettles to maintain your balance on the steep, muddy slopes.

  • Visitors on X recommend pre-booking the Maasai Mara Balloon Safari. It’s a significant investment, but the dawn flight over the Mara River provides a vertical perspective of the migration that you cannot get from a vehicle.

  • If the gorilla trek feels daunting, guests on Quora note that hiring a local porter for $20 USD is highly recommended. Not only does it support the local economy, but they provide a steadying hand on the most difficult sections of the trail.

  • Keep your camera gear in waterproof "dry bags." The Bwindi rainforest can produce heavy downpours with only a few minutes' notice, even during the "dry" season.

Best Time to Visit

The visibility of wildlife and the difficulty of the trekking trails change with the East African seasons.

Season Months The Experience The Trade-off
Peak Dry June – Aug Best for spotting Big Five in Kenya; firmest trails for gorilla trekking. Highest number of tourists; permits must be booked 6+ months in advance.
Short Rains Nov – Dec Lush green landscapes and excellent bird watching in Uganda. Trails are muddier and more slippery; humidity is higher in the forest.
Long Rains March – May The quietest atmosphere; great for seeing newborn animals. Heavy rain can delay transit; trekking is at its most physically demanding.

Recommended Start Time: Arrive in Nairobi at any time on Day 1. The welcome meeting usually takes place in the evening, allowing you to settle in before the 7:30 AM departure for the Mara on Day 2.
